I. Ecological and Water Quality Regulation Functions
1. **Stabilizing Water Quality pH**
The main component of petrified wood is silica, and its chemical properties are stable. Generally, it does not significantly change the pH value of the water quality. It is suitable for most fish tanks with neutral or slightly acidic water, such as those for raising tropical fish and characins.
**Note**: If there are alkaline stones like limestone and coral stone in the fish tank at the same time, the overall acid - base balance of the water quality needs to be comprehensively evaluated.
2. **Providing Mineral Trace Elements**
During the formation process of petrified wood, a small amount of minerals (such as calcium and magnesium) may be retained and slowly released into the water. This can provide trace nutrients for fish and aquatic plants, especially suitable for planted tanks or ornamental fish that need minerals, like cichlids from the three African Great Lakes.

II. Landscape Creation and Ornamental Value
1. **Simulating Natural Ecological Scenes**
Petrified wood has unique textures, retaining tree rings, grain patterns, and even traces of insect damage. Placing it in the fish tank can create natural artistic conceptions such as "primeval forest" and "riverbed relics". When combined with aquatic plants, driftwood, or rocks, it can enhance the sense of hierarchy and storytelling in the fish tank.
**Matching Suggestions**: It is suitable for natural - style tanks (simulating specific habitats), South American - style fish tanks (matched with driftwood and Indian almond leaves), or planted - scape tanks.
2. **As a Landscape Framework**
Large pieces of petrified wood can serve as the main framework of the fish - tank landscape, supporting the climbing of aquatic plants or vine - like plants (such as Bolbitis heudelotii and Bucephalandra). This forms a three - dimensional landscape. Small pieces of petrified wood can be used to pile up "stone piles" or "rockeries" to increase the depth of field.

III. Providing a Habitat for Aquatic Organisms
1. **Hiding and Breeding for Fish**
The surface of petrified wood is uneven, and the gaps and holes can become hiding places for small fish (such as neon tetras and killifish) or shrimps and snails. This is especially suitable for timid fish to relieve stress. Some fish (such as dwarf cichlids) will also lay eggs and breed in the stone crevices.
2. **Attachment of Beneficial Bacteria**
The rough surface of petrified wood can provide attachment space for beneficial bacteria such as nitrifying bacteria. This enhances the biochemical filtration ability of the fish tank, helping to decompose organic matter in the water and maintain clean water quality.
